There is a bit
of controversy concerning the Beings known as the Watchers, or the Keepers of the Gates. There are reputed to be
Four Gates, one for each of the directions and elements. North is Earth, East is Water, South is Fire, West is Air. There is a bit of
controversy concerning that, as well. Some say it has to remain as it was formulated for the European traditions. However, if
you are on a continent and positioning such that the equator or a volcano is to the north or any other direction of you than South,
use it and not the European method. Such elitists have no place in the world of REAL magick. They are theoretical magick users, rather
than practical and I've no use for them.
The Watchers have been incorporated into many of the mainstream religions, including xitanity. The Watchtower is a well-known religious
publication of the Jehova's Witnesses, along with the folks
who keep an eye on the Jehova's Witnesses. *soft laugh* The Eyes Of God Are Watching You. That is supposed to refer to the Watchers
set at the Four Gates by the hand of God to watch us. To Me, when put and used in that context, sounds more like Watching Us, not Watching OVER Us.
Nevertheless, I've worked with these Guardians, which is how I think of Them, and They are real. These "angels" with "flaming swords" are really
The portals They watch over; for that is truly what They guard, not us, lead into the higher dimensions of divine, spiritual, mental and astral. Ultimate is Their
gateway to the God/desses and the elemental dimension is what Wwe use to activate those doorways. However, when asking the Watchers/Guardians for Their assistance
or attendance to a rite, to lend that special and wondrous power that is only Theirs, the elemental doors are the only ones necessarily opened. The doorways/gateways/portals
They guard need not be opened...not without good reason. They do tend to grow a bit cranky when asked to stand down from Their posts. Take that from Me.
The term "Watchers" is also used for another wholly different type of being.
This being is a conjuration; a creature of shadow. Now, while many beings and creatures
of Shadow are NOT DARK, this one is! It is a menace sent to the victim of one
using magick in the darkest of ways; to spy and cause distraction, harrassment, physical harm and sometimes even the termination of life. These monstrosities are
the epitome of a bastardization of Magick, and what the Craft [be it Wicca, Asatru, Eclecticism or any of the other Old Ways] is about.
Both types of Watchers are the Watchers about which I speak here.
Why add this to defense Magick? Well, for two reasons. First of which, if you know from what direction an attack is coming, you can beseech that Guardian to assist you in your
defense. Many times, you need do nothing more; the Watcher does the rest. However, if it is the other kind; the malevolent kind against which you find yourself in need of defense,
there must reside within the victim, the knowledge with which to defend him/herself.
A strong knowledge of the light path of Voo-Doo, Santaria, or any of the other African-based Houngon magicks is highly preferable. However, lacking that,
there is one other method which I've personally used and therefore consider it to be "Tried and True."
Take 6 mirrors, preferably round in shape and cut. Draw your circle, light a white candle and bless them and dedicate them to the Gods of the Underworld, in whatever path/pantheon You use or choose. Charge them to deflect
rather than reflect, all things sent from behind the Veil of Death. Next, take a large crystal (or glass) bowl, fill it with spring water which you have blessed yourself. Cover the surface of the water
with white flowers. No stems or leaves, just the flowers. Whole ones are the materia of choice, but petals may also be used.
Use your own blood to draw the "Triquetra" on the face of each mirror, then use the run-off wax from the white candle
to trace over your first set. That done, place each mirror on Your altar in the position in which they will be later placed about your home; ie:North to the North, South to the South, etc. I used appropriately-colored mirrors the one time I've done this spell alone; ie: green for North, red for South, etc.
I've also done it along with another Magick User, using brown plastic frames. That spell did work; however when I used the colored glass, it worked much, MUCH better. This spell sometimes requires haste and no small degree of intrepidity; therefore, it is not always possible to "shop" for components. Use what you
must, what you have or what you can afford.
Dedicate each mirror to its corresponding Guardian/Watcher. Ask that Guardian to watch for things coming back from that mirror. Ask that whatever it is, be dealt with in such a way that the Guardian sees fit, but that it not be allowed to return to you..
When you have done this with each mirror to the north, south, east and west, there are 2 mirrors left. These are for the dimensions most forget about.
Above and below. The realm of the Deities and that of the Underworld. They are who, to which these remaining mirrors, are to be dedicated; your God/dess and the God/desses of the Underworld of your path/pantheon, respectively.
When you are done with this, earth the excess energy; give it back to our Great Mother [The Earth], and take down your circle. Take the remainder of your blessed
water and salt from your altar and use it to mix a strong saltwater solution. Add 3 drops more of your own blood and 3 drops of honey. Mix it well and, using your fingers, use it to purify the six areas where the mirrors are to be placed.
The North one to the north, the South one to the south, and so on; each facing the wall, the ceiling, the floor, respectively. The one dedicated to your God/desses is to be tacked to the ceiling in the center of your home and the one to the Underworld is to be placed on the floor as near the center as possible and in a protected place where
it will NOT be broken. See "Mirrors" for more on this.
Recharge these mirrors every three days. Just direct your energies into them without disturbing them. Neither move, remove, nor take these mirrors down for ANY reason, even after the spell is finished and done!! Wait a minimum of a year
to remove/reinstate these enchantments.
