Kitchen Magick

This is what I refer to as "daily magick." Kitchen magick or kitchen witchery, has its formation in basic herbalism, with candleburning, stone, color and healing magick thrown in. It comes from a love of one's family and home. Protective magick, as well as prosperity, success, health, tranquility and repair magicks can all be done while working in the kitchen.

Magickal cooking is not merely throwing blessed ingredients together; it is making love to your food. Pour yourself into it and above all, have FUN! Cooking should never EVER be viewed as a chore. The opportunity to enhance the lives of your family should always be appreciated and done with love. DO NOT cook when angry. Save back those frozen burritos and the big bag of fish sticks for those times.

The acts involved in Cooking the Magickal Way include, but are certainly not limited to:

Please note that Magickal Cooking and/or Kitchen Witchery is much more than a blending of consecrated items. Each ingredient must be evoked, awakened. Each vessel must be not only consecrated, but dedicated in service to your Deities. When blended, the entire work works together to create a Magickal effect not only upon the one who prepares such a meal [or item], but to those who partake of it [or use it].

Consecration of the kitchen should be the first task. Remove everything to a central table or work space area. Dishes, pots and pans, spices, food articles, cups, silverware, etc. Mix some hot soapy water which has been blessed and consecrated. Clean your cabinets and shelves, refridgerator, sink, counters, and floors with Pagan Holy Water. Visualize ridding your kitchen of all negative feelings, memories, emotions, and thoughts. As you wipe out the dust, wipe away these Magickal inhibitors. Visualize their being obliterated with each dunking of the cloth used for cleaning, into the bowl of blessed water. The consecration of the water annhialates these psychic dustbunnies upon contact. "See" it happening and it will happen. When you are done, you may then mix a new clean bowl of water, consecrate it, mix in a little soap, and use it to mop the floor. I find this works so much better when it is done by hand.

Please note that anything which cannot tolerate cleaning by water, or which an abrasive would ruin [such as stone countertops, etc.] you may substitute powdered salt for sea salt, or grind table salt into a fine dust using your mortar and pestle. Use this salt to consecrate whatever cleanser or at least the cleansing cloth which you are using.

Once you have consecrated your kitchen area as a Sacred Space, you then can go in many directions. Depending on the amount of time available to you, your amount of resolve and dedication to this project [and it IS an all day project], you may wish to consecrate each cooking vessel, each serving dish, each cooking utensil, each individual fork, knife, and spoon. My cooking appliances are all consecrated every Full Moon [see the table below], and every sink of dishwater is comprised of blessed water. Every spice and condiment bottle is wiped down with the same. Even the vent hood over the stove should be consecrated to the element of Wind, as that is where the vent fan is housed and controlled.

Suggestions for Consecration of Common Household Kitchen Appliances
  • Stove/Hot Plate, Microwave, Oven, Crock Pot, Toaster/Toaster Oven=the Fire Deities
  • Refrigerator/Freezer, Blender, Mixer, Utensils [Cooking and Eating], Pestle, All Cutlery, Telephone=the Gods & Goddesses of Air
  • Sink & Dishwasher, Coffee Maker, Tea Kettle, Stemware=the Divine of Water/Sea
  • Breadmakers, that Chia Garden in the Window, Stone Countertops, All Growing Herbs [for cooking herbs, see Herbal Magick.]and Plants, Cabinets, Plates, Bowls, Mortar=Earth Deities.

Arrangement of your kitchen should be something easy, comfortable, and workable. I find Myself wanting to use the word, "utilitarian," but a Witch's Kitchen is nothing of the kind! A state of organized chaos, is the Witch's Kitchen. There are odd herbs, strange bottles and jars of unrecognizable substances. There are usually too many cups and not enough eating utensils. The herb cabinet is where the organization should be found; herbs and seasonings sorted by need, planet, or season should be neatly arranged and readily accessible. Everything should have a place near where it will be used the most. Some Witches find the time to sort their herbs, canned and dry goods, and condiments by direction as associated with each season. Personally, I don't have the room for that, but it sounds like a lovely [magickally if not in convenience] idea.

When your kitchen is [finally] that Magickal place you always knew it could be, you will likely be dying to COOK SOMETHING! Here are a few suggested activities for Magickal Cooking.

  1. Use consecrated cooking vessels and utensils.
  2. Boil that chicken or steam those vegetables in Pagan Holy Water.
  3. Envoke the essences of all herbs/spices used, independently of one another, and then again as they are stirred together.
  4. Research your meals. Start early in the day and plan your meal [and subsequent seasonings] around the area of life in need of assistance. To find what herbs/spices/vegetables affect which aspects of life, I highly suggest "Cunningham's Encyclopedia Of Magical Herbs," by Scott Cunningham, Llewellyn Publications; St. Paul, MN; 1994. The tables and charts in the back are priceless reference materials for cross-referencing. Also, for a step-by-step introduction to the USE of herbs and not just what affects what, GO HERE. If you do not have the means to run right out and pick up the books you need, GO HERE. you can also GO HERE or GO HERE for a list of herbs and their uses for health purposes.

Meats, also, have meaning. Listed below, is My own personal list comprised over the years. It is divided into masculine and feminine, as are the herbs. If you are not familiar with this division, I will explain it briefly right now. Just as there are specific months and times of the year and the day, dedicated to either the male or the female aspect of the Deities, there are also male and female colors, herbs, etc. It is explained more fully in the Encyclopedia I've linked to in the paragraph above.

I've never seen a list of meats like the one I've made. It's completely exclusive to DragonFyre Weyr, Inc. I do hope it helps you in your magickal quest.

    Eating Out

Most people do enjoy a good meal. For a slim few, this means cooking at home, but for the vast majority, it means...dining out. If your life is anything like mine, when you're not at work, getting ready for work, or recouperating from work, cooking isn't right up there on the old priority list with a shower and a snuggle in a soft, warm bed with the one you love. True, we cannot live on love alone, but I do imagine we could exist comfortably for some time. And, if you have children, the problem is exascerbated twenty-fold. Whatever your situation, you may find you don't always have the time for that perfectly seasoned and roasted water fowl with cinnamonned apples from your own grove complete with apple dressing and fresh garden vegetables from your own garden. I don't know about you, but I'm alREADY tired.

Fast food, as a rule, is a serious no-no; both health wise and magick wise. But practicality sometimes overshadows what is good for us and what is not. Just remember to bless and sanctify your food. Always. No matter what it is. *holding My hands up* I know, I know, it seems like an awfully...unpagan...thing to do...but you must remember that those "other guys" bastardized practically every aspect of who and what we are. Many of the things you may consider theirs...was ours, first, this being one of them. They say they do it to keep "demons and evil spirits" from entering their bodies by way of their food. Wow. Yet magick, somehow, isn't real? Doesn't exist? Is evil? WhatEVER.

Cultural/Ethnic foods are fun and can serve a magickal purpose. When using spells or working with beings from Aztec, Incan or Mayan culture, try Mexican foods. Stregherian? Find a nice, inexpensive Italian restaurant. And so on.

If there simply IS no cultural restaurant for your path/working, then anything which pleases you will do. Select menu items which contain ingredients appropriate to your working or path. I am heavilly Draconite and trust me when I say there just are no restaurants where I live which specialize in dragon foods. Personally, I abhor mutton, so the greek restaurant won't work in that case. But when doing faerie magick, greek food is quite nice. Fresh fruits, grape leaves and the like go quite well with faerie magicks.

I am also a student of the Tuatha de Dannan, and trust me again when I say, short of pubs, there is nothing here which is even remotely suitable. That is when you have to get creative. Anything pleasing to the palate will suffice, but there has to be a central theme. Bless it, charge it, and dig in without compulsion.

Some of you are asking, "What? Do that in a restaurant? Around people? Without tools?" If you are one of those people, then CLICK HERE to find out how to do magick without tools.
